Wu Guanzhong, one of the foremost painters in Chinese modern art,
was a leading exponent of abstraction in China. He became renowned
for synthesising Eastern and Western sensibilities, exploring the
possibilities of abstraction in traditional Chinese ink and Western oil
painting.
Wu saw form as an important component in appreciating a work of art,
seeing beauty in formal visual elements like line, shape, colour, texture
and composition. These were of critical concern, much more than subject
matter and physical resemblance to an object in reality.Wu believed
that appreciation of art begins with appreciation of the formal visual
elements. To him ,this approach is instinctual, something that comes
naturally to all of us.
